Education to Employment Committee

(Preparing the Workforce)

General Tasks: This committee provides recommendations to prepare new and future workers for the workforce. It identifies issues and resources to promote the lifelong learning concept, including: (1) Providing K-12 schools and students with appropriate labor market information to encourage them to start thinking of careers; (2) Linking Workforce Center Systems and technology to schools; (3) Encouraging public education to teach students the importance of soft skills in the workplace; (4) Enhancing and promoting access to technology which provides career information (i.e. ISEEK); and (5) Increasing the recognition of high quality, technical employment opportunities.

Lifelong Learning Committee

(Enhancing the Workforce)

General Tasks: The global economy and changing technology requires both individuals and businesses to embrace the concepts of lifelong learning and on-going training. This committee focuses on continuous education after high school and continuous up-to-date knowledge and skills throughout a worker's lifetime, including: (1) Addressing the mismatch between employment opportunities and post-secondary education programs; (2) Sustaining and improving workforce development education and services; (3) Addressing just-in-time learning and transferable credits; (4) Increasing customized training; (5) Enhancing and promoting access to technology which provides career information (i.e., ISEEK); (6) Increasing the recognition of high quality, technical employment opportunities; (7) Promoting modular learning - training modules that add up to form a credit-based course; and (8) Developing skills assessments and competencies.

General Tasks: This committee focuses on ensuring that state policies and procedures are in alignment to properly support business development activity. This includes: (1) Identifying potential recruitment strategies for employers; (2) Disseminating best business practices to increase productivity; (3) Investigating strategies to encourage technology-based investments and upgrades; (4) Investigating strategies to encourage businesses with high wage jobs to re-locate to Minnesota; and (5) Promoting work life initiatives - Practices that businesses utilize to promote productivity and help attract and retain workers.

Workforce Development Committee

(Sustaining the Workforce)

General Tasks: This committee concentrates its efforts on short and long-term strategies and activities to further develop Minnesota's workforce. It provides guidance for continuous improvement for workforce development services for both employers and job seeker customers including: (1) Ensuring that business friendly, demographic labor market and occupational information is available on both the state and local levels; (2) Identifying the supply and demand of essential skills, locating gaps and developing strategies to fill these gaps; (3) Building and improving upon current performance measure standards to ensure that Minnesota's employment and training programs are meeting businesses' demands; (4) Identifying methodologies for assessing return on investment; (5) Identifying efficiencies and recommendations for consolidation, elimination or enhancement of programs; and (6) Leveraging resources for the highest return.

Self-Sufficiency Committee

(Expanding the Workforce)

General Tasks: This committee identifies barriers and solutions to workforce participation to fully utilize the talents of all Minnesotans, including: (1) Identifying the unemployment and/or underemployed: persons with disabilities, welfare recipients, older workers, displaced homemakers, immigrants and refugees, prisoners, etc. their barriers, and how to promote the full employment of all Minnesotans; (2) Identifying and promoting career ladders; (3) Promoting soft skills and other efforts to help the transition into the workforce; and (4) Investigating strategies to help remove barriers to employment, i.e., day care, transportation, health insurance, etc.
