Terry Leas has devoted his professional life to education at all levels. He taught social sciences to students at a public middle school in south Georgia for nine years, taught undergraduate students at private two-year Thomas College (GA) and public Yakima Valley Community College (WA) for seven and three years respectively, and taught graduate students at Florida State University for one year. Besides his teaching experience, Leas has served as a department chair, an executive assistant to the president, a campus dean, a dean of students at two colleges, a dean for basic skills, a dean for institutional effectiveness, a night dean, a director of financial aid, a director of continuing education, and a director of personnel.

Leas has been active in professional and community organizations, including serving as a president of Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. An expert in the law of higher education, he has published numerous articles and chapters in such publications as the Journal of Negro Education , The Education Law Association's Yearbook of Education Law, West's Education Law Reporter, the Journal of Law & Education, Education Law Into Practice, and others. Leas served as President of the Education Law Association in 2000. He earned a bachelor's degree in social science education and a doctorate in higher education administration from Florida State University and a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from Valdosta State College. Leas has served as President of Riverland Community College since July 2003 and on the Southeast Minnesota Workforce Investment Board since 2005.
