Don began his career with Hancock Nelson Wholesale Grocery in 1963. He was active in his union and became a member of the executive board of Teamsters Local 503 in 1971. He then became president in 1974 and served in that capacity until January 1998, when he became the government affairs representative for Teamsters Joint Council 32 DRIVE.

Don is the father of four children and lives in Roseville. He owns a lake home south of Duluth, where he spends his leisure time fishing. He is an occasional golfer and walks two or three miles a day.
