Scan the Horizon or Move Vertically from Altitude to Altitude

While entrepreneurial leaders need to have both of these skills (as noted in earlier sections), successful organizations often have program staff who use these same skills in different ways to ensure the entrepreneurial leader's ideas can be acted upon organizationally.

Staff who "scan the horizon" and/or can move vertically can better serve program participants because they recognize emerging needs, predict future impact, and adapt to changing conditions making their services more successful.

Families Forward example: Hennepin Technical College partnership
An organization such as Hennepin Technical College has a diverse staff who were able to scan the horizon and move vertically from altitude to altitude. For example, HTC staff recognized a need for modifying their English instruction approach after finding that previous methods of instruction were inconsistently effective. They developed an applied workplace English model that builds language instruction around specific language needs of the employer / industry. They reviewed models from around the country, institutionalized the new model campus-wide, and promoted the use of this model throughout the state college system. Not only were they tuned in to their customers, but also quickly envisioned and built a system-wide improvement.
