Strategic Leadership Priorities

The WorkForce Center System must make business / industry needs a priority. The Department of Employment and Economic Development has asserted that businesses are the primary customer of the WorkForce Center System. However, service providers still receive more face to face contact with jobseekers, which makes their issues seem more pressing.

Minnesota's public educational institutions must become more flexible. If people are not pursuing training through the public system due to the lack of flexibility, then Minnesota must either ensure the current system becomes more flexible or the quality of services offered through other service providers meets Minnesota's needs.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and its local campuses should make aligning with business / industry needs a priority. Though many people at the state level would agree that this is a direction the System is heading, this priority needs to be integrated into the priorities of every local campus.

When faculty retire, the local public and private colleges and universities should view those retirements as an opportunity to bring new people in with new expectations. The new faculty should understand the need for classes offered at a variety of hours and updated curriculum that meets both individuals' and employers' needs. Local administrators must recognize this need for change because they control the hiring of their faculty. Many faculty will be retiring from Minnesota's local institutions over the next decade, so this is Minnesota's opportunity to make changes without disrupting the age old traditions of academia.
